Film Review: The Theory of Everything

Rebecca Fatharly reviews the critically acclaimed Stephen Hawking biopic, which has just finished its run at the Gulbenkian and is currently showing at Curzon Canterbury. The Theory of Everything is a wonderful biopic story about Stephen Hawking and his first wife, Jane Wilde, and how together they weathered the storm of his illness. It reminds me of Russell Crowe’s ‘A Beautiful Mind,’ where the beautiful girl falls in love with the ill genius. It is touching from start to finish, with Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones portraying the journey from falling in love to falling apart. Even when their…

Following social media crazes such as the ice bucket challenge, a new trend is spreading across all platforms, in which women are sharing ‘lipstick smear selfies’ and nominating their friends to do the same. Has this trope evolved from the days of women being used only as nameless props, prizes or objects to be saved, as seen in classics such as ‘Star Wars’ and ‘King Kong’? This sexism is often said to…
