Summer music at the Marlowe Theatre

Canterbury’s summer months might seem tranquil without the majority of its student population, but popular venues will still be thriving. From June to September the Marlowe Theatre will be host to a diverse range of musical performers. There’s sure to be something for everyone, whether you’re a student, Canterbury local or visiting tourist!

Here’s a taste of the variety:

Sona Jobarteh, Friday 24th June – £16

Sona’s soft melodic vocals blend seamlessly with her rhythmic musical composition. This composer, producer, songwriter and musician will be performing at the Marlowe next week with her signature instrument, the West African kora. Expect beautiful string-led tracks, irresistible rhythm and relaxing vibes.

Matt Cardle, Tuesday 5th July – £25

Singer, songwriter, musician and winner of The X Factor 2010, Matt Cardle stands out thanks to his impressive vocal range. His Marlowe performance will include hits from his mainstream studio albums as well as new material, apparently due to be more electronic than previous records.

Toots and the Maytals, Tuesday 6th September – £34.50

One of the most well-known ska and reggae groups around, Toots and the Maytals are embarking on their first British tour for four years. Formed in Jamaica in 1961, this band has influenced numerous greats such as The Clash and Amy Winehouse. Better yet, their ability hasn’t waned – in 2005 they won the Grammy Award for Best Album. Expect strong reggae beats and a lot of fun!

Sam Lee, Wednesday 7th September – £13.50

Sam Lee is a valuable asset to the folk music genre not only as an artist, but as a specialist and teacher. He has meritorious experience collecting and sharing traditional folk songs from the gypsy and traveller communities, his efforts revitalising this ancient genre. He will be performing with the ensemble Sam Lee and Friends to bring these timeless tracks to Canterbury’s Marlowe Theatre.
