You may be asking, what is millennial pink?

For those who don’t spend hours on ‘We Heart It’, Millennial Pink is a shade of (you guessed it) pink which is particularly pastel without being sugary sweet. More of a blush hue, this pale colour has seeped into our current lives slowly but surely. Rather hard to define, it means a lot to different people with salmon and apricot being thrown into the description mix. However, most talk of it as pink with the blue taken out.

The trend of this shade began in 2014, with the release of Wes Anderson’s ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’ and has since gone on to appear as Pantone’s joint colour of 2016 as ‘rose quartz’. ‘Pale dogwood’ was one of their top colours for spring 2017. It has since appeared in many fashion designers’ collections, and Acne bags, so is now making its way down the fashion hierarchy. Mostly though, it pops up in photographs and edits on the internet, scattered across Instagram and Pinterest.

Being a classic colour and yet very on-trend, this tricky shade has crept into our everyday.

So, why does it matter?

It’s important because of its frequency. More and more designers are picking up on the appeal of it, so you’ll see it being used on more products.

More significantly though, is the reason behind its use. It represents an ironic shift in collective consciousness. Embodying a post-prettiness, its androgynous uses have become a symbol of new understandings of gender. Having been worn on all genders, millennial pink truly does speak for an updated world in which acceptance is key.
