Costa Concordia Death Toll Reaches 13

On the 13th January 2012, the Costa Concordia, a luxury cruise ship operated by Costa Cruises, partially sank off the western coast of Italy. The ship was sailing off the Isola del Giglio and hit a reef that ripped open the side of the hull, echoing the famous Titanic tragedy of 1912. 4,197 people were evacuated, and the death toll currently lies at 13. 64 others were injured, three with serious injuries. About 20 people are still missing. read more

SOPA Bill Divides Opinion as Wikipedia Blacks Out

A new bill intended to combat internet piracy has divided opinion. SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) was introduced to the White House in October 2011. The act would remove the “safe harbor” that website owners currently have. The “safe harbor” means that corporations give website owners a chance to remove any material that breaches copyright from their site. Removing this allows corporations to shut down websites that have material that breaches copyright, even if it was not posted by the owners but by visitors to the site. read more

Pencil Stabbing in Canterbury High Street

A 38-year-old man was stabbed in the eye with a pencil in Canterbury’s High Street on Christmas Eve. According to police investigating the incident, the man was looking for a taxi with his son when they got into an argument with another group of people, before one man attempted to stab the 38-year-old in the eye with a pencil. The incident took place at about 1am on Christmas Day. A 27-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault and was put on bail until early February. read more

UKC Warns Students Over Street Robberies

The University of Kent has emailed its students to urge them to beware after a spate of street robberies in Canterbury. Students have been warned to avoid situations where they are alone or in a less popular area during night time. The move acts on police advice following an outbreak of street robberies in the city centre over the past few days, the most recent of which occurred on Saturday evening. ----- read more

Doctor Who Convention to Hit Kent in January

This January will see the TARDIS land in Tunbridge Wells for the unique Big Blue Box Event. This one-day convention, however, is about more than bringing Whovians from across the UK together. Taking place in the Trinity Wells theatre on the 14th of January, all profits made by the convention will be used to benefit Compaid, a charity based in Kent. read more

Bogus Websites Crackdown

The Metropolitan Police’s E-Crime Unit has revealed that they have shut down over 2000 fake shopping websites designed to deceive customers and obtain their bank details. Some of the fraudulent sites, which claimed to sell products by brands such as Tiffany, GHD and UGG at cut prices, took payments but failed to send the promised items. The police are now urging consumers to be to be aware of any suspicious website activity, especially during the Christmas period, by checking the legitimacy of the website and using only one card for online shopping. read more
