Government cracks down on student visa fraud
Less than a week after temporarily suspending student visas from India, after a dramatic 650% rise fuelling concern over fraud and terrorism, Britain has imposed a new set of restrictions on foreign students from outside the EU. Although there has been speculation that it is part of Labour’s pre-election plan to appear tough on immigration, the official reason is to stop the increase in immigrants, mainly from the Indian subcontinent, coming in for work or purposes other than study. read more

Government study shows students willing to pay higher fees
University students would be willing to pay more for degree courses that would result in the highest earning careers according to a recent government-commissioned study by the Institute for Employment Studies (IES). Such a system has only been applied in Australia so far, where students pay double the amount for a degree in accountancy, law, and economics and also in education or nursing in order to find a high paid graduate job in each of the respective fields. read more

UKC Students Against Homelessness Society partake in 5 day sleep-out
In a sleep-out, which ran from Friday 29th January to Wednesday 3rd February, Alex Self, Damon Reid-Williams and Zoe Scandrett, students of the University of Kent, braved the cold streets of Canterbury to raise awareness for Canterbury’s homeless. The three members of the UKC Students Against Homelessness Society also raised money for charity, Porchlight, as part of the Poverty and Homeless Awareness Week. read more

Police to launch spies in the sky
Police in the UK are planning to introduce unmanned spy drones for conducting routine monitoring work of antisocial motorists, protesters, agricultural thieves and fly-tippers, in a significant expansion of state surveillance. The arms manufacturer, BAE Systems, producer of a range of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that are being used in war zones, is adapting the military-style planes for a consortium of government agencies led by Kent police. read more
