Preview: V Day

Valentine’s Day is normally associated with romance, love and happiness, unless you’re single, bitter and twisted. However, for many women around the world the fact that they are single is the least of their worries.
V-Day was created by Eve Ensler, the famous playwright of The Vagina Monologues. She interviewed over 200 women to compile the narratives and testimonies of the characters in this play. The stories that she heard inspired her to create V-Day and campaign for womens rights. The V in V-Day stands for Victory, Valentine and Vagina. This play often comes with many preconceived ideas of militant feminism and periods that put some women and most men off the idea of even talking about it, let alone seeing it. While the subject matter is undeniably vagina-focused, the treatment of it breaks down the awkwardness of the topic making it more accessible.
This campaign, over the last 10 years, has grown into a world wide success with the The Vagina Monologues being performed in colleges and theatres accross the world on or around Valentine’s Day.
The monologues will have you laughing uncontrollably one second and sitting in a stunned silence the next, ranging from light hearted stories about being a women and the trials and tribulations that accompany it to shocking and moving accounts of girls and women who have suffered violence and abuse. One of the most horrific monolgues is that of the Comfort Women. These women were prisoners of war kept in poor conditions perpetually raped and used as objects for male sexual pleasure. Not only does this story reaveal the hardship they encounted and begs the people who did this to them to appologies, ending in a dramatic chorus of “Sorry, Say it, Say your sorry,” it is also pushing the goverments that condoned or still condone wartime sexual violence to abolish it.
This is only one instance of the V-Days campaign for the eradication of worldwide violence against women and girls, including rape, battery, incest, female genital mutilation and sexual slavery. This cause has raised over $50 million and educated people all over the world. To find out more information about this incredible organisation or to donate yourself long on to www.vday.org

Crazy stuff, I had no idea that valentines day was part of a feminist movement, although I did have a feeling it was always about the girl. Oh well, I live to serve.
