Togo banned from African Cup of Nations

The government decided that Togo will pull out of the tournament and withdraw themselves from the African Cup of Nation games. However, the players wanted to play after the catastrophe and they were withdrawn after a few games by their government.

The ban has shocked the world of football as they would be banned from playing in the next two African Cup of Nations. Peter Pedroncelli an editor from Goal.com believes that Togo has done “nothing wrong” and “the unbelievably bad judgement of the CAF needs to be criticized.” Footballers also have come to the defence of the Togolese team as he believes that he “hopes the sanctions will be lifted because went to Angola to play and not to die.” Keita also revealed the feelings of the Malian team to the BBC and said “our first reaction was to go home.” Issa Hayatou the confederation president is under serious scrutiny as Adebayor has said that “he must clear off.

This decision [to ban Togo] is monstrous.” Many believe the decision made against Togo shows the incompetence of the current chairman of the CAF, Issa Hayatou and the CAF itself in implementing this ban under the circumstances shows the ineptitude and with the government interference it would be extremely harsh and unfair to force them into two CAF bans when an extreme circumstance was the cause of their non-participation in the tournament.

Togo must now go take the case to the leader of FIFA, Sepp Blatter, in the hope that the CAF’s controversial decision is overturned.
