Summer Ball had it All

The Ball that everyone had been talking about, that we were bombarded with emails on, and a mass advertising campaign that made it almost impossible to not be aware of when the Summer Ball was happening, and who was going to be playing, finally arrived on June 5th.

5000 tickets were available for what was said to be, “The event of the year.” However, tickets sold out around ten days before the Ball itself – leaving many people without a ticket. Rumours had been going around that, on the 1st June, Extras were going to sell 200 more tickets – which were said to be available from 9am.

The hundred or so students that did wake up to queue were bitterly disappointed, as the rumour was just that, a rumour. Despite attempts by the Union to expand on the capacity, their efforts were to no avail. Where this story turns sour, however, is that some of those lucky enough to possess a ticket were advertising on the Summer Ball Facebook group that they were prepared to sell them. Offers were being made way over the original asking price and students were making a fortune on needy people, desperate to see the likes of Feeder and Florence and the Machine.

The night itself came and did indeed fail to disappoint. The headline act, Florence and the Machine, blew the crowd away with her strong lyrics and powerful stage presence. Hits such as “You’ve Got The Love”, “Dog Days Are Over”, and “Rabbit Heart” were supported by a large crowd, cheering the headliner on throughout.

The same might not be said about Tinie Tempah. Many students were disappointed with his short stint on the stage. But, a Pendulum DJ set and an impressive performance by Feeder certainly made up for it.

With free attraction rides, ice cream vans, short queues at the bars, a great variety of music, drink and food, it seems that the Ball everyone had been talking about, lived up to its name. It was definitely a £47 well spent and I, for one, cannot wait until 2011.
