Did You Hear That: Overheard at Kent Uni

overheard.jpg

The idea of finding a computer in the library on a normal sunny day is hard. You walk into the library, hoping that you won’t have to walk to the fourth floor to find one. So imagine you walk into the library on a cold and windy day, you chances are zero. But as you walk around you can see blue and white writing on almost every computer.

But do you share small talk with your mates, whilst walking down to get a coffee? Why bother? With the rise of Zuckerberg’s Facebook empire, you can talk with your mates and finish that all-important essay. Nevertheless it is quite clear that gossip, rumour and the rest of it have entered a digital age.

The group ‘Overheard at Kent Uni’, set up in the summer of 2008 proves just that. The group provides amusement for students by its members sharing phrases or even sometimes just a word that they have ‘overheard’. You definitely see how the creator got the title?

The twenty notifications that appear on Facebook each day go something toward proving the popularity of the group. But if you were still doubtful about the true purpose of the group take a look at its first message:

"Suppose I should start…Studio 1, Marlowe… 'Have you ever tried licking soap because it smelt like it might taste nice? I have…it didn’t.'"

The underlying message of the page could be philosophical, social, and we could even throw a little bit of Freud in there (after all we are academics!) while we are at it. But when asked why they joined one student said ‘it’s funny, and gives a sense of community.’ Another simply said ‘I logon for the laughs.’

This group is growing and has recently gained five thousand members, all at one time or another, a Kent student, the eternal community. So maybe the dream of Kent University becoming the Gossip Girl’s new Upper East Side isn’t actually that far off? Have you ever seen yourself as the British Serena Van der Woodsen? Or what about Blair Waldorf and the guys among you, do you see a Dan Humphrey or Chuck Bass when you look in the mirror?

One thing is clear though, Kent Students aren’t done with ‘Overheard’ yet. The FACEBOOK group they create everyday with their words or rather the words of others and is kept alive by their sense of community. One question to you though:

Did you hear that?

  • The page speaks volumes about students at Kent, smartass clevercloggs humour, people trying to correct petty spelling and grammar mistakes, the 'banter' is just.. well it's not even banter just a load of smartasses with no dignity looking to come off smarter than one another. Some of the groups members use the group daily to have a social life.
