Wimbledon day 6 – Britain’s sweetheart

Chris Heron reflects on a superb day for British Women’s Tennis. By the end of day six, normal service seemed to resume at Wimbledon. The outrageous events of the early days of the tournament are now history as the remaining seeds start to take their customary place in week two. The first seed in the men’s draw, Novak Djokovic, defeated Jeremy Chardy in a 6-3 6-2 6-2 straight sets win. Seventh seed Berdych played Kevin Anderson in four sets, winning 3-6 6-3 6-4 7-5. Editor’s comment: The State of English Football

It would only be right to discuss the state of the England football team nowadays as a collective of the senior and junior sides with the future and present of the England side represented at numerous levels. However, after a disappointing summer, the future of English football currently looks as weak as the present. Promoting its 150th anniversary, the Football Association, in its wisdom, decided to stage two fixtures to celebrate such an occasion, one with the Republic of Ireland at Wembley, and another with Brazil, to coincide with the re-opening of the iconic Maracana stadium. Wimbledon Day 5 – Home Success Not Dampened By Rain

Chris Heron continues his fantastic coverage of SW19, reflecting on a good day for British Tennis. The rain-hit Day Five of Wimbledon was unusual in that there was sustained British success under the roof of Centre Court. Both Laura Robson and Andy Murray won comfortably in their matches on Centre Court, and kept an umbrella wielding home crowd in high spirits after many matches were delayed due to rain. Around the courts, the fourth seed David Ferrer beat Roberto Bautista Agut 6-3 3-6 7-6 (7-4) 7-5 in his delayed match to reach the third round. Thirteenth seed renaissance man…

Wimbledon Day 4 – Rain Strikes

Chris Heron reflects on a wet Day 4 at SW19. The tradition of rain-delayed matches carried on another year as the roof of centre-court closed for the first time in the 2013 Wimbledon championships. Despite the rain delays, many matches were completed and the a sense of normality returned after the events of the first three days of Wimbledon. Men’s seeded players Tomas Berdych (7th) beat Daniel Brands 7-6 (8-6) 6-4 6-2, Del Potro (8th) beat Levine 6-2 7-6 (9-7) 6-3 and ninth seed Richard Gasquet defeated Japan’s Soeda 6-0 6-3 6-7 (5-7) 6-3. In the women’s draw there…

Wimbledon Day 3 – Federer stunned

Chris Heron continues his Wimbledon round-up, reflecting upon a stunning day at SW19. Day 3 of the 2013 Wimbledon Championships was one of the most entertaining and surprising Wimbledon days of recent memory, with several spectacular matches, upsets and a record number of retirements in a single day. Andy Murray strolled through to the third round of the Men’s singles with a 6-3 6-3 7-5 win over Taiwan’s Yen-Hsun Lu, and will face Tommy Rovredo in the next round. However, he was one of the few seeded players who did not struggle on the grass courts of SW19. Maria…
